*50:50 solution

  1. Place water in mixing tank.
  2. Add Barium Carbonate and the Soda Ash.
  3. Start mixing.
  4. Add the clay slowly.
  5. When the slip starts to thicken, add one-third of the indicated amount of Sodium Silicate (Sodium Silicate should always be used in a 50:50 solution of water and Sodium Silicate).
  6. Add more clay.
  7. Add the remaining sodium silicate in small amounts.
  8. The slip should be mixed at least 3-4 hours, depending upon the amount of clay. (Example: for 2000# batch, mixing time is 6-7 hours.)
  9. After mixing the slip for the specified amount of time:
A.) Check the viscosity, using a hydrometer. It should read 1.760 - 1.820.
B.) Check the weight per pint. Weight exactly one pint of the slip. It should read 815 - 830 grams/pint or 28.8 - 29.2 ounces/pint.
Allow for the weight of the container.
  10. After these slip tests, allow the slip to age at least 24 hours.
  11. Mix the slip once again after aging.
  12. Repeat step 9.
