| *50:50 solution |
- Place water in mixing tank.
- Add Barium Carbonate and the Soda Ash.
- Start mixing.
- Add the clay slowly.
- When the slip starts to thicken, add one-third of the indicated
amount of Sodium Silicate (Sodium Silicate should always be used
in a 50:50 solution of water and Sodium Silicate).
- Add more clay.
- Add the remaining sodium silicate in small amounts.
- The slip should be mixed at least 3-4 hours, depending upon the
amount of clay. (Example: for 2000# batch, mixing time is 6-7
hours.)
- After mixing the slip for the specified amount of time:
A.) Check the viscosity, using a hydrometer. It should read 1.760 -
1.820.
B.) Check the weight per pint. Weight exactly one pint of the slip.
It should read 815 - 830 grams/pint or
28.8 - 29.2 ounces/pint.
Allow for
the weight of the container.
- After these slip tests, allow the slip to age at least 24
hours.
- Mix the slip once again after aging.
- Repeat step 9.
